On average, US ship costs are among the lowest in the world, according to the International Chamber of Shipping.
But shipping rates can be a major factor in those low prices, too.
“It can be hard to compare the cost of shipping to other countries,” says Kristina Smith, chief executive officer of the International Shipowners Association, a trade group.
“But if you have a ship that costs $1,200 to ship to a different country, that can cost more than $10,000, especially if you’re in the business of international trade.”
